WILD PILLAR · 01 MOVE THE MOVE GUIDE
Strength for the life you want to lead.
Carrying your shopping. Getting up from the floor. Taking the longer way home. Movement can begin with the things you want to keep doing. After 40, your starting point is still your own: choose a routine that fits your ability, interests and everyday responsibilities.

Train for the decades ahead
Skeletal muscle is your primary organ of longevity. After 40, progressive resistance training, skeletal loading and grip stability do far more than tone—they support metabolic health, protect bone mineral density through the menopause transition and keep your body capable, powerful and independent.
Anchor your week around two to three progressive resistance sessions that challenge your major muscle groups and load the spine and hips, paired with daily Zone 2 brisk walking and deliberate mobility work. Consistency and progressive overload—not punishing exhaustion—are what signal muscle and bone tissue to stay strong.
Beneath the habit
Movement gives your body a reason to adapt
When muscles work against resistance, they are asked to produce more force than usual. Repeated, appropriately challenging practice can improve strength. Walking and other aerobic activity ask more of your heart and breathing; balance and flexibility have different jobs again. A useful routine includes more than one kind of movement because no single activity develops every capacity in the same way.
Bones also respond to loading. Weight-bearing activity puts force through the skeleton, while resistance exercise makes muscles work against a load. This helps explain why being active is part of bone care, especially around and after menopause. The right activity depends on your starting point: someone with osteoporosis, an injury or a long period of inactivity may need individual guidance.
For everyday life, think about the ability you want to practise: carrying a bag, walking a hill or feeling steadier on your feet. Build towards it gradually. A session that is suited to you is more useful than copying somebody else's hardest workout. Keep effort, technique and recovery in the same plan.
How this connects
MOVE ↔ FUEL
Activity creates demands; food supplies energy and amino acids used to maintain and repair tissue. A strength routine and adequate nourishment complement each other.
Explore FUELMOVE ↔ CONNECTION
A class or regular walk with someone can provide both movement and time together. Choose company and a pace that make the plan workable for you.

KNOWLEDGE INTO ACTION
Three things to try.
Prioritise progressive resistance
Schedule two to three dedicated strength sessions each week—using dumbbells, kettlebells, reformer Pilates or structured bodyweight work—focusing on compound lifts, carries and controlled tempo.
Load the skeleton & build grip
Mechanical loading stimulates bone-supporting pathways around menopause. Include axial loading, step-downs and farmer's carries to build grip strength, core stability and postural resilience.
Balance strength with Zone 2 & mobility
Pair heavy resistance days with brisk outdoor Zone 2 walks and ten minutes of hip, thoracic and ankle mobility on your mat to support cardiovascular stamina and joint freedom.
START SMALL
Your first-week starting point
- Choose one comfortable route or accessible activity and a time you can try it.
- Find a suitable beginner strength session or ask for help choosing one.
- At the end of the week, note what felt manageable and choose the next small step.
Make it right for you.
If you have not exercised for some time, have a medical condition or concerns, speak to your GP before starting. Choose activity and intensity suited to your fitness. This starting routine is not an individual exercise prescription or the full weekly activity recommendation.
